‘Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD’ season 1, episode 11 review: Did Coulson learn about his death?

When it comes to “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD’ the first half of the  season was only so-so, nothing that was worth all of the hype the show got before airing. We expected a lot from this series and even though it started to get better just before the holiday hiatus, it still wasn’t anywhere near the caliber of work that we expect from Joss Whedon.

The episode this week picked up right where it left off, with Coulson being held by Centipede and SHIELD trying to find a way to get him back. Some of the SHIELD big guns were brought in to help in the search, but Coulson’s team feels that they are too focused on finding Centipede and not on finding Coulson. After getting Skye kicked off the plane, the group hopes that she will be able to find a way to actually locate Coulson so that they can bring him back safely. After finding out where Coulson is being held, Skye radios back to the group and they head off to save him.

Coulson on the other hand has been tortured as they try to get one important piece of information out of him… what happened the day after he died? Why do they want this information and how is it going to help Centipede? They want to know how Coulson was brought back to life so that when their soldiers die they can bring them back. Raina ends up playing on the one thing Coulson wants to know more then anything… the secrets that SHIELD is keeping from him regarding his death. Coulson decides to co-operate in hopes of uncovering his past and learns that he was never in Tahiti after his death, but instead it was a medical facility. He hears that Fury ordered for Coulson to be brought back to life and sees himself begging the doctors to let him die as some sort of robot works on his brain. If this is really what happened then where is the giant scar that would go all around his head from the brain surgery?

The team rescues Coulson and Raina is arrested, but will he be the same leader? Coulson decides to seek out one of the doctors he saw in his vision and they finally tell him the truth. That he was dead for days and that Fury used every scientist at his disposal and any experimental procedure possible to bring him back. He explained that the machine messing with his brain was there to give him a pleasant memory instead of the agony he’d gone through for days.
