Christmas specials and marathons (December 24): ‘Elf,’ ‘A Christmas Story,’ ‘SVU,’ and more
After a few days of starting to dip our toes somewhat into the Christmas special / marathon season, Tuesday is going to be an all-out blitz (or Blitzen?) of these things as we prepare for the start of the holiday season. There’s going to be great traditions, new traditions, and all sorts of good stuff worth watching if you love the holidays. If nothing else, some of it could be a great thing to put on in the background as you do some other stuff with your loved ones getting ready for Christmas morning.
Just one quick note before we begin here: All times listed below are Eastern standard.
Christmas specials
“Elf,” running for 24 hours straight starting at 12:00 p.m. on Starz – It’s a modern-day holiday classic in our books, and one that we feel like Starz is completely justified to give this sort of treatment to.
“A Christmas Story,” running for 24 hours straight starting at 6:00 p.m. on TBS – This has been happening for over a decade now, and we couldn’t be happier. It’s almost the same sort of joy that came when the Old Man got his “award” in the mail. Also, this vignette style is perfect for watching a little while wrapping gifts, and then getting back to it.
“How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” starting at 8:00 p.m. on ABC – You can start things off by watching the classic cartoon, and then it shifts into the movie starring Jim Carrey.
“It’s a Wonderful Life,” starting at 8:00 p.m. on NBC – It’s a classic that every knows, and a tradition for NBC. If you love the movie, you’ll love it again.
As advertised all week, ABC Family will continue to air holiday movies throughout the day.
Marathons
“Law & Order: SVU” from 4:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. on USA – Just in case you want to feel very depressed on your Christmas Eve, here’s a show about terrible people doing terrible crimes!
“Doctor Who” from 8:00 a.m. until 6:00 a.m. on BBC America – “Doctor Who” and Christmas have found a way to go hand in hand.
“Moonshiners” from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 a.m. on Discovery – We don’t get it either, but apparently this is what Discovery wants to push on December 24.
“Modern Marvels” and “American Pickers” from 7:00 a.m. until 3:00 a.m. on History – Personally, we’re just happy that History is airing a marathon of something other than “Pawn Stars.”
