‘Glee’ season 5 spoilers: ‘Pitch Perfect’ star to battle Darren Criss, Jenna Ushkowitz at Nationals
The last time there was a major guest star competing against the New Directions on “Glee” in a major competition, it was Jessica Sanchez back at the end of last year. She is just one of many, though, in a list that includes a number of other notable names including Charice, the new “Flash” in Grant Gustin, Johnathan Groff, and also Alex Newell prior to Unique’s transition over to McKinley High.
So who is the latest name to be added to this list? Let’s just say that this is someone who has a history already of being in things based around singing competitions. Sources confirm that Skylar Astin of “Pitch Perfect” fame has been cast to play the role of Jean-Baptiste, the lead singer of the rival glee club called Throat Explosion at Nationals. With Vocal Adrenaline already out of the way, the show had to find a way to introduce another glee club; not only were they successful in doing that, but they managed to do so with a club that has a pretty intimidating name to it.
Will they be serious competition to the likes of Darren Criss, Jenna Ushkowitz, and the rest of the gang? At the moment, we cannot really sit here with a straight face and say that we particularly care that much one way or the other. New Directions won Nationals last year, and there is suddenly not that much drama in seeing yet another competition. As a matter of fact, this may be the least excited that we have ever been for a Nationals competition, which makes it a good thing that it could be the last one we ever see. Following graduation, the rumor mill suggests that we are going to be shifting over to New York City full-time, with maybe some of the other characters popping up occasionally.
What do you think about Astin’s casting, and do you hope for this to be the last glee competition that the show brings you? Share below, and be sure to click here to watch a fun video that focuses on Chris Colfer, Adam Lambert, and others.

For one thing, I don’t agree w/you about ‘not caring’ about another singing competition. That’s the biggest draw to me where Glee is concerned. Watching them sing (& my singing along) is almost always the best part of Glee (w/a few exception; that gingham thing @ regionals was stupid I thought & I wasn’t real happy w/that song they sung @ Nationals 2 seasons ago, some song by Meatloaf?), but w/very few exceptions them singing is always fun. Their enthusiasm is infectious. I’m definitely looking forward to Blaine, Sam & hopefully Arty moving to NY, but I’m starting to get sad at the prospect of no longer seeing Ryder, Kitty etal back at high school with Mr. Shue, Coach Slyvester, Coach B & even Figgins. I’m finally caring about their characters & would hate to see them phased out. But I’m still hoping to see Blaine & Elliot singing, what amazing voices they both have. I think it would be phenomenonal. I love Kurts character, but lets face it, his singing is not his strongest talent. He has a pleasant voice & Glee’s version yrs ago of Kurt singing I Want To Hold Your Hand after his dad had a heart attact, was incredible, but I haven’t & won’t be running out & buying songs on itunes that “Kurt” is singing like I do w/songs in which Blaine, Rachel & now Elliot is singing leads in (I’m still blown away w/”Elliots” rendition of Marry the Night. And I’m still playing that song on my I tunes every day & re-watching his performance if it from the ‘Katy vs Gaga’ episode every few days, he’s electric). So if it’s competing or just singing for fun, keep it coming I say, that’s what Glee is all about anyway, isn’t it?
