‘Californication’ season 7 to be its last, Showtime confirms
If you love Showtime’s “Californication,” let’s hope that you are prepared to see the show walk off into the sunset. After so many years on the air and extending the TV career of one of its stars in David Duchovny, Showtime confirmed on Monday that the upcoming seventh season of the show is going to be its last early next year. This appears to be a decision made primarily from the network’s point of view, and we can understand why. Shows become more and more expensive to make as time goes by, and “Californication” was never much of a ratings warrior in the first place.
Speaking out in a statement per TV Guide, Showtime’s boss David Nevins had the following to say about sending off one of the last major remnants from the regime that was around prior to his arrival to the network in 2010:
“With its unique blend of lyricism and excess, Californication has been one of our groundbreaking signature series. We will always be indebted to Tom Kapinos for leading the creative charge on this memorable comedy, and to David Duchovny for making us root for an unapologetic hedonist like Hank Moody.”
One of the network’s other signature shows in “Dexter” ended (horribly) at the end of last summer, and based on reactions to that ending, the likelihood of there ever being a spin-off is pretty low. But the network has made up for its absence now with two new dramas in “Ray Donovan” and the likely-to-be-awards-magnet “Masters of Sex.” Also, they have a lineup of comedies that still includes “Episodes” and “House of Lies.” With the end of this show, they will likely be bringing on another comedy that will hopefully capture the attention of viewers in its own way.
Are you going to be bummed to see “Californication” go, or is this one of those shows to you that you are still surprised is on the air in the first place? Be sure to share your thoughts below.
