‘Supernatural’ season 9, episode 6 review: Is there more still to Misha Collins’ Castiel?
Going into tonight’s “Supernatural” season 9 episode, we knew that things were going to be pretty darn good. You had the return of Castiel, and that alone made this a pretty good time. But then again, the show found a way to yet again bring it up a notch by having Cass become … a gas station worker. Yep, it was like the show decided to take some of the best elements of “Corner Gas” (a great Canadian comedy) and then incorporate supernatural stuff and some other assorted madness.
The thing about this season is that the writers know that they have something great in Misha Collins, and the joy that comes with this is throwing this human toddler (at least in terms of actual experience on earth) into crazy situations. He really cared about his work since he wasn’t jaded, and he of course read every sign from his boss as a belief that he was going to be going out with her on a date. The fact that he ended up as the babysitter instead was both sad and hilarious, and we could think of nothing other than a hope that someone is going to buy the guy a cold one after all of this.
Unfortunately for Castiel, there was another rival that he was forced to take on in the process of his “babysitting” in Ephraim, a man desperate to try to cleanse the world of all suffering. This is a dangerous guy since you have to consider that he still has some powers, where Cass is 100% human at this point. We could get into all sorts of details regarding “Heaven’s work” and whatnot (which were Ephraim’s doctrine), let’s instead focus on what was the coolest part of the confrontation: Seeing these two engage in human / angel warfare. Then came the shocker … Castiel really wasn’t 100% human after all, or at least that’s how it seemed to us. We don’t know how more of this will come out, but it definitely makes things interesting. His story concluded this week without much of a happy ending romantically, and it still seems that his “human” life is going to remain a mystery for a while.
We also have to spend at least a minute now talking about what was happening with Sam and Crowley back at the Men of Letters HQ where Crowley, much like the Joker in “The Dark Knight,” decided that he just wanted his one phone call. this led to a back-and-forth with Abaddon that didn’t seem to go well, but he then “kept his agreement” by looking at the angel document. Of course, Crowley is up to no good, and Sam had to know it the moment that he even gave him a shot.
In the end “Heaven Can Wait” was not always perfect (the Crowley scenes were a little too predictable), but it was fun. We love Castiel episodes when they give us so many different sides of the character, and this did that. Grade: B+.

Okay, I’ll bite – what do you mean about him not being 100% human? I didn’t notice anything that wasn’t human… he killed Ephraim with an angel sword… he made the sigil on the wall (or tried to) both things Dean has been able to do… what did I miss? :)

Not sure what you mean about him not being 100% human – what did I miss?!
But your description of him as a “human toddler” is exactly why the story line with April made me so uncomfortable – he is so emotionally inexperienced, and that scene just felt like him being taken advantage of…

I’d give it an A-. Normally Cass episodes are by default A+, but this one is less because of the contrivances needed to make the Nora (Cass’ boss) plot work. But man, the pain Cass was in…no wonder the other angel could hear it from miles away.
