‘Dancing with the Stars’ 17 reaction: Derek Hough blames format for surprising exits

How will she do? -Dancing with the Stars” may not be winning any ratings battles these days, but it is at least proving one thing: contestants can still be sent home on any given week, regardless of what happens to them in the competition. Bill Engvall has somehow managed to make it extremely far into the competition despite not exactly starting out as a favorite, and you can say the same thing about Leah Remini. Meanwhile, the likes of Christina Milian, Snooki, Elizabeth Berkley, and Brant Daugherty have all been sent home, arguably most of them well before their time.

So what’s the reason for all of the successive controversial boots? The easy way to look at it is that it’s the same thing that happened back when Bristol Palin and Chaz Bono were on the show: If you get headlines or have a fan base, you stay regardless of it you’re the best dancer. None of the people that we mentioned are huge with this show’s demographic; Berkley is the only real surprise given the age range of the show’s viewers, and even with that, we had said at the start of the season that we didn’t think she would last long.

One other explanation for the “shock” factor of the votes comes from Derek Hough, who tells “Access Hollywood” that one major explanation for the “crazy” votes is simply that the votes from last week count for this current week; therefore, you can see someone get a perfect ten, be eliminated, and you get even more upset than you did before.

While we know there is outrage and bad juju for many fans of the ballroom right now, we still don’t think that there will be that controversial of an ending to the show when the credits roll. Derek and Amber Riley still are the consensus pick to win; we’ve ranked them at #1 every week since the start of the competition, and we have no reason to change that now.

Do you think that “Dancing with the Stars” needs to finally change their voting, or is the whole unknown part of it one of the reasons why you love the show in the first place? Share below!
