‘The X Factor’ USA spoilers: The theme for Sweet Suspense, Lillie McCloud for top 12

Lillie -Wednesday marks the first time that the viewers of “The X Factor” USA (which are a small but loyal bunch at this point) are going to have an opportunity to have their say on their favorite artists; but for now, the question is just what sort of music they are going to be performing.

Well, we’ve just gotten word that for this week of performances, the theme is going to be something that we have (regrettably) seen on countless singing shows in the past: Motown. Wait, isn’t this show supposed to be gearing itself towards young people? This is what we don’t get, just as we don’t get why there is even a need for theme week if you are just going to pick the same ones. There is probably not a single Motown hit that has not been covered on some other singing show in the past. Plus, if you look back at some other big performances on “The X Factor” over the years, they have been ones like Carly Rose Sonenclar’s “As Long As You Love Me,” Chris Rene doing original music, or Fifth Harmony’s “Anything Can Happen.” These are all songs that are either modern, or original. What are young acts like Sweet Suspense and Restless Road going to do?

We do at least know for now what one of the artist performing is going to be singing. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Lillie McCloud confirms that she is doing Stevie Wonder’s “All Is Fair in Love.” A great song, but we wouldn’t be opposed to retiring the Stevie Wonder songbook from television singing shows at this point. His songs are just so overplayed. Lillie may at least have a little bit of an advantage here in that she’s older, and may at least remember the tail end of the Motown movement.

We’ll try not to judge this too much more until the episode airs, but we’re nervous … just as we have been for most of the season so far. For now, we just recommend clicking here to see our full contestant rankings for the show.
