ABC gives ‘The Goldbergs’ and ‘Trophy Wife’ full seasons, ‘Super Fun Night’ more episodes

To their credit, ABC is making some bold decisions when it comes to their programming … and they are apparently doing it using some sort of measure that we are not quite seeing.

After expressing our personal surprise earlier that “Back in the Game” has been canceled (though the entire 13-episode run will air), the network confirmed today that both “The Goldbergs” and “Trophy Wife” are receiving full seasons, even though the latter is the lowest-rated new comedy on the schedule. While this may be baffling, we imagine that they are looking at one of two things when making the decision here:

1. The show may be doing well in online viewing or some other measure that they are seeing.

2. The show also has been getting better and better, and quality is something that they feel as though they can build around.

The second point here, though, makes a little less sense when you hear that “Super Fun Night” has also been handed an additional four episodes, bringing its total to 17. That is hardly a full endorsement, which to us suggests that they will use the remaining weeks left over to try out something else, similar to what took place last spring with “Family Tools” and “How To Live With Your Parents (For the Rest of Your Life).” What we are basically seeing here are expectations to find a good partner for “Modern Family,” but the problem is that we’re still seeing the network on the prowl for it a good five years into the comedy’s production. It almost makes you wish that they just kept “Happy Endings” there and were done with it in the end.

What do you think about this news: Do you think that “The Goldbergs” and “Trophy Wife” have earned their full seasons, or do you think that ABC is disregarding the ratings perhaps a little too much? Share below! While we do question the decisions from a business point of view, we do give the network a round of applause for allowing the creators at least a small opportunity to do just that: Create, and hopefully do so with great stories we can get behind.
