‘The X Factor’ UK notes: Little Mix’s ‘Move’ video; One Direction’s surprising ‘Story of My Life’

The latest news -For those of you looking for our latest “X Factor” UK contestant rankings, we are going to have those to share a little bit later in the day. For the time being, we are instead going to talk about some music that’s actually out right now from two of the most successful groups to ever come out of the show.

1. Little Mix’s “Move” music video – While it is still to be seen just how successful the girl group is going to be when it comes to this single, what we will say for now is this: They are off to a great start with this track. It basically has in it almost everything that you would expect: Dancing, outfit changes, and some guys to be paired up with the ladies.

Thanks in part to a difference in the way that music is handled and charted in Britain, we are still waiting to see whether or not this ends up becoming a hit; this song in some ways reminds us of early Spice Girls, and we could see it doing very well. Like they did with their first album, the girls are waiting until early next year to try to really get everything off of the ground in America. Touring with Demi Lovato and Fifth Harmony (another “X Factor” group) should really help with that.

One Direction … folk band? – This is probably the biggest surprise (no joke) since we’ve started covering artists from “The X Factor.” For their latest single, One Direction has apparently decided that they are no longer interested in just being perceived as a boy band doing songs like “Live While We’re Young.” “Story of My Life” is a very different sound, and one that feels much more arena / folk rock in the same vibe of The Fray or even Phillip Phillips from “American Idol.” It still does have a little bit of a new age vibe with the harmonies, but it’s a million miles from their last album.

With that being said, we think that this is the best thing they’ve ever created. There was only so long they could continue that boy band sound, and this is much more grown-up and shows a lot more of the guys’ emotional spectrum. Let’s hope that the rest of their upcoming album reflects this.
