‘Beauty and the Beast’ season 2, episode 3 review: ‘Liar Liar,’ and Cat’s big decision

Did Cat finally give in to Vincent on tonight’s “Beauty and the Beast” episode? Hardly. Instead, this was the first time all season long that we really started to feel like the show was going in the best, most-realistic direction for all of its characters. The irony here is that this episode was titled “Liar Liar,” and the truth is what set Cat free in the end.

After struggling for a long time to figure out whether or not she could dupe Vincent by keeping up a romantic ruse with him while still conducting an investigation, Cat quickly came to the realization that the guy is just too good of a human lie detector. In the process, she finally admitted that there is no way the two can be together given the way in which the rules of the game are currently structured. Vincent may want to be with her on a certain level, and he is seemingly starting to get his memory back, but Cat still realizes that there is no way that this is someone that she can be with when he hides so much of who he really is.

Let’s take a look here at just everything that Jay Ryan’s character is not willing to share right now: His job, his motives, or what he does when he is out on his own. Thanks to that, the two are forced to go their separate ways, though there are still plenty of reasons to hope for them to be together in the end. The investigation into the beast attacks is ongoing, and both parties are valuable in getting to the bottom of it. Also, Cat still has to protect Vincent just for the sake of justice, even if the two are not a romantic couple anymore.

By far, this is the best episode of “Beauty and the Beast’ season 2, mostly because it started to shake off the cobwebs of that amnesia story. The writers realize that the heart of the show is a fully-aware Cat and Vincent, and we are getting there. Of course, having those little detours (which include a very important conversation between Cat and Heather) only add to the overall feeling that you get when watching one of the episodes that things are really starting to roll now. Grade: B+.
