ABC’s ‘Scandal’ season 3, episode 3 review: Did Huck kill Olviia Pope’s father?

Take a look -After two episodes of “Scandal” season 3 that were almost an avalanche of drama, this one was a little bit more of a snowball rolling down a hill, and it’s ironic that we say that, given that this episode was all about a massive bomb scare that nearly cost a Congressman his life. This is just how crazy this show is; we’ve gotten to be so used to madness that even the shocking appears normal. We would be stunned if there was an episode that rolled by that did not contain a few crazy events.

While the story about the bombing was intense to say the least, the question that we have to ask here is: Did any of this really matter to the long-term plot? This was a tragic symptom in some ways of a show having 22 episodes since not everything is going to matter that much, and some stories are going to be drawn out. So to see Olivia lie to a woman about her son being a terrorist? Just another day at the office.

So instead of focusing on that story in particular, let’s move instead to the enormous events that took place near the end that somehow managed to take this episode to something worthy of being one of the best on primetime TV.

1. Mellie’s awesome drunken speech, where she went from demanding sex to making a giant fuss about how happy she was that Olivia was not killed in the blast. This way, she does not get to die as a hero, and has to continue to suffer on earth in the way that Mellie feels like she deserves.

2. The great “he owns me” crying fit by Huck as he admits that he did not kill Olivia’s father, despite how badly he wanted to do it. Somehow, Guillermo Diaz just keeps getting better and better.

3. Olivia realizing that her father also “owns her,” as she had her tearful confrontation with Jake Ballard at the end, as she wondered how someone like him managed to escape mostly in one piece.

So what can we saw? These three scenes turned the tide, and made a solid episode something great. Grade: A-
