‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 5, episode 3 review: Is Katherine the cure?
If we could describe tonight’s “Vampire Diaries” episode in two words, it would be as follows: Doppelganger drama. There was plenty of this going on in the episode tonight, and it came in almost every shape or form imaginable. It’s all in some ways getting confusing, and it makes us wonder just how many more of these doppelganger’s there are out there. Who’s to say that we are not going to be meeting Damon’s shadow self in the near future, or Caroline’s?
Tonight’s new episode brought with it the introduction of Tessa (Janina Gavankar), a new addition to the show who is extremely powerful and skilled in the ways of witchcraft. She is also an expert when it comes to all things Silas, since she has spent the good majority of her life trying to hunt him down.
If you enjoy Candice Accola, you probably do not care for how the vast majority of this episode was really themed all around Elena and Katherine actually having to work together for a change as they tried to uncover Silas’ new scheme. Meanwhile, Tessa (who is really using this as a code name) was bringing Stefan at least reasonably close to death just so that she could see the link between him and Silas to help weaken the latter.
But somehow, all of this really paled to what was the biggest shocker of all to us: The thing that Silas really wanted was the cure … which runs through the veins of a certain Katherine. Also, there was a sudden concern that came out about whether or not Damon was not going to be able to handle Stefan being around, thanks to some mumbo-jumbo about doppelgangers being linked to other doppelgangers. But he’s not going to listen to society, and who they say that he should be with! That’s a nice little move for Damon, but the thing that he has to worry about if whether or not Elena is going to be drawn to Stefan now that “Tessa’s” spell caused his memory to go away.
The biggest problem with this entire episode was the Stefan shocker at the end; these vampire shows have tried to differentiate themselves over the years, but this feels way too close to what happened to Eric Northman on “True Blood” in the past. Therefore, we can’t give “Original Sin” a full endorsement despite it having some good moments. Grade: B-
