‘The Goldbergs,’ ‘Trophy Wife’ each receive three more scripts

The GoldbergsWant some sort-of good news when it comes to some of ABC’s new comedies? Well, know that the network has at least ordered three more scripts for both “The Goldbergs” and “Trophy Wife.”

The bad news for these shows is that neither one of them is pulling in big ratings, especially with a solid lead-in courtesy of “Agents of SHIELD” on Tuesday night. They basically averaged a 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which is close to what Fox did for their two-hour comedy block despite having no real lead-in at all. The good news? Both of these shows are in the top half of the new comedies this year in terms of quality. “Trophy Wife” in particular has improved from its lackluster pilot, and is now putting together some good stories where physical comedy reigns supreme. “The Goldbergs” has always been pretty great, at least so as long as you are a fan of nostalgia and family comedies.

For the sake of those unfamiliar with the way that networks choose to do business, these three scripts do not equal a guarantee by any means that the network is going to order anything beyond what they are already airing. This is mostly a test to see what the showrunners and the writers have planned if they do decide to order more episodes. Think of it almost as them dipping a toe into the water, just to see if they want to go even further than that. There are a number of other scripted dramas out there right now with similar deals, including “Dads” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” over on Fox, and of this entire group, “The Goldbergs” is the only one that we feel pretty confident about in terms of it getting the full season. ABC just has so many other holes to fill that it would make no sense to get rid of this one right now, especially when people are liking it.

What do you think about this news, and are you excited to see what these shows are going to be putting out on the air soon? Be sure to share your thoughts below!
