‘Dexter’ series finale: Spin-off talk, and where we could go from here

What's next? -Now that we are getting close to “Dexter” airing its series finale, we are hopefully nearing a point now where we can ask a question that is on the minds of so many: Just what sort of spin-off show could we ultimately end up seeing if it happens?

Going into season 8, our strongest opinion was that if the show was going to create something about a separate character, and it would be Hannah McKay. Why is that? She is a reasonably well-known as a character, and separated from a certain percentage of the cast at least enough so that it would not be hard to separate her from everyone else on the show.

But now, we’re not so sure that this is what we are going to see happen for a number of reasons. For one, Hannah’s reception among fans just seems to be getting weaker and weaker. The common criticism is that she is just not relatable, and there is little chemistry between the character and Dexter.

So who are the other strong candidates? If Showtime does go in this direction, something starring David Zayas and Desmond Harrington could be fun, given that Quinn and Batista are such a fun pair; however, Jennifer Carpenter has already said that she is done with Deb, and she feels so much like endgame for Quinn that we don’t see it working.

Meanwhile, other possibilities, such as newcomer Jacob Elway, do not seem to be important enough. If you go away from that, who else is there? What we are getting at here is that unless there is some surprise during the final episode, is there really any one person that could actually do a spin-off show? We would rather just see the franchise come to a close tonight.
