‘Dexter’ season 8, episode 12 preview: Michael C. Hall on possible reaction to series finale

The end -We are now at the end of the road. In a matter of just a few short hours, “Dexter” will be over as we know it after an incredible eight-season run on Showtime. That is a phenomenal achievement no matter how to you look at it. It’s a drama series on premium cable that managed to not only find an audience, but keep it despite being at its core a show about a guy who kills people, chops up their bodies, and then puts them into bags and dumps them in the ocean. Somehow, we want to root for this guy after watching this.

But will there be a guy left to root for after tonight? It’s an interesting question for an episode that has thankfully managed to keep its ending under wraps. Speaking to Yahoo! TV, all Michael C. Hall would say leading up to the episode is that he hopes the episode leaves a very distinct impression in the minds of viewers, and promises that it will not be as open-ended as another major HBO series in “The Sopranos” (minor spoiler alert for those who are will planning to watch back the James Gandolfini series):

“I don’t think the ending will leave any huge questions in the air like ‘The Sopranos’ did, in terms of, What was the next frame? or, Where were we headed? There will be some interpretation left for people to debate about … but I think there’ll be a pretty broad spectrum to the response. I think some people will be satisfied. Some people will wish that it had gone down differently. Some people will be both of those things.”

So basically, you’re probably going to either love it or hate it, which is the same way that most people feel about series finales at this point. There’s not one show out there that everyone thinks ended perfectly (though we think that “30 Rock” earlier this year was as close to perfect as perfect can be); if the show manages to get at least a little bit of a more favorable response than “Lost,” it will be a win. Full disclosure, though: We really liked the “Lost” ending.

1. This one focuses on Deb trying to stay alive in the back of an ambulance … with Quinn at her side.

2. Meanwhile, this one focuses on Dexter and a brief confrontation with Elway, where he warns Hall’s character to back away from Hannah McKay.
