‘Law & Order: SVU’ season 15 spoilers: Anthony Weiner-inspired story on the way

Just in case you were extremely curious to see what sort of story “Law & Order: SVU” was going to try and rip from the headlines next, we now have an answer for you: The show is taking on the tale of former Congressman-turned Mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner.

This news was confirmed last night to Showbiz 411, where executive producer Warren Leight said that their story, which involves the “sexting” of young women, would involve a Latino candidate for office, thus fulfilling the “SVU” tradition of having something similar to the real story, but also just different enough to make it stand out. The election for Mayor has been a teased storyline long before this leaked, so we imagine that part of this plot probably would have been there even if Weiner decided to not cause an even greater stink for himself on social media.

This is not even the only ripped-from-the-headlines story that the show is taking on this year, as they also have something that is a bit of a hybrid of the Paula Deen scandal mixed with the Trayvon Martin trial. You can call this exploitative all you want, but NBC likely just calls it a way to bring in some more ratings. Another positive explanation could be that it brings more attention to negative things in the world, along with possible solutions as to how to deal with them.
