2013 Emmy preview: Do ‘Game of Thrones,’ ‘Breaking Bad’ have chance against ‘Homeland’?
Now that the 2013 Primetime Emmy Awards are only a few days away, it is the perfect time for us to start off our own prediction series for TV’s biggest night.
While some awards may be harder to predict that others, what makes the Outstanding Drama Series race somewhat interesting is that there are a few candidates that you can really eliminate from contention without much thought at all. This is really a four-show race, and unlike past years, we don’t think that there is a consensus as to who is the favorite. We’re basing our picks on quality, momentum, and also even the past precedent created by voters.
6. Downton Abbey (PBS) – Many were surprised to even see it nominated over “The Americans” or “The Good Wife,” and we don’t see it coming close to winning for a year that was mostly just depressing. There is a better chance of Mrs. Patmore time-traveling to our apartment and making us lunch.
5. Mad Men (AMC) – It’s weird to see a four-time winner so low on the list, but “Mad Men” season 6 was not even close to the show’s best season. It started slow, and we don’t even remember half of what happened outside of Bob Benson being strange and Sally Draper catching Don with Sylvia. Still a very good show, but not the jaw-dropper it once was.
4. House of Cards (Netflix) – The hipster choice, since it is so new and in a different format than the other shows. Having the entire season premiere at once really hurts its odds, though. It is hard to keep the buzz going for a show that you can watch all of in a week, especially when the others have more time to build traction. Plus, there are a contingent of people (including many TV writers) who prefer the weekly format since it gives time to build anticipation.
3. Homeland (Showtime) – This is where things get interesting. “Homeland” airing many months ago did not hurt it last year, but that was when it was undisputed as the most awesome thing out there. Season 2 was not so universally loved, and it should be damaged by some shows that have done more lately.
2. Breaking Bad (AMC) – Here’s the interesting thing here. Were voters going specifically on the first half of season 5 (which they are supposed to), we don’t think it would have this much of a shot, but the second part is airing now, and it is phenomenal. Therefore, we see it getting a bump just because it’s the show that everyone is talking about.
1. Game of Thrones (HBO) – The Red Wedding was the most shocking TV event of the year, and whether you are talking about technical categories or acting (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau!), this was the fantasy’s finest year yet. This is the time for a genre show like this to be recognized by the TV Academy, and we believe that the Emmys are actually going to make it happen.
