2013 MTV VMAs: Ariana Grande, Austin Mahone perform during red-carpet show
In addition to the MTV Video Music Awards red carpet show being a showcase of fashion in the city of Brooklyn, the hour also served as an opportunity for a pair of rising stars in the world of music in Ariana Grande and Austin Mahone.
Before anything else, do you want to talk about the extremely awkward position that the show put Ariana in immediately after performing a medley, including her single “The Way”? First of all, they had her giving away a set of tickets to some people in the audience, and she chose a little girl. This almost immediately led to other bloodthirsty people in the audience throwing things in her face to sign, which in turn led to Ariana having a look of whiplash on her face. This was clearly an overwhelming experience for the Nickelodeon star, who said that she was “glad” that her performance was over after she got done performing on the night.
As for Austin, he didn’t have to take part in the same sort of crazy spectacle with the fans, and his performance was almost exactly what you would expect: Some singing, a little bit dancing, and lots of playing to the crowd. It’s basically the last singer to follow the likes of Justin Timberlake and Justin Bieber, but whether or not he ends up achieving that same sort of mainstream success remains to be seen.
