Ever since the casting of JoAnna Garcia Swisher as Ariel on “Once Upon a Time” season 3, there really has been one thing that most diehard fans of the show have had on the tip of their tongues: More questions. For example, will she be just like the character in the Disney movie, and who from the show does she have a past connection with?
There are only two things that we can reveal right now. First, Ariel will make her first appearance several weeks into the season, with an episode bearing her name. Also, executive producer Edward Kitsis promises (per TV Guide) that there will be both something old and something new in the show’s version of the character:
“She’s somebody who wants to see the world. That spirit will run in her DNA still, but we’ll meet her in a surprising way.”
This (at least to us) sounds like whatever stage in the character’s life that we meet here, she is still going to be partially unfulfilled and interested in trying different things. Given that Eric could also feasibly appear, it’s possible that either he is someone from her past, or someone who is living in Neverland at the moment.
Ariel is clearly one of the most-popular and most-demanded characters on the show, but how long will she really be around? That is the major question now to go with the ones listed above. One of the unfortunate things about her is that she could be pretty limited to where she can travel, which also in turn means that we may not be able to see that much of her on the show beyond just the fall half of this season.
“Once Upon a Time” premiers on ABC on Sunday, September 29, and we will of course have more scoop before then.
