‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 5 spoilers: Nina Dobrev’s Elena and college conspiracies

Usually when you make the big decision to go to college, you really choose to take advantage of this opportunity to go off, find yourself, and enjoy what could be some of the happiest, freest moments of your lives. One thing that you do not typically do? Start to believe that everyone within this collegiate environment could be a part of some sort of larger problem that needs to be handled.

Luckily, “The Vampire Diaries” is no ordinary show, and if there was no drama surrounding Elena Gilbert in some shape or form, wouldn’t it be boring? We think so, and executive producer Caroline Dries must agree based on what she said recently about Nina Dobrev’s character to KSiteTV:

“We’re aware that sometimes when characters go to college, it’s like ‘oh, this feels like a new, weird show.’ It’s not like that. But she goes and uncovers a big conspiracy at Whitmore where she goes. That’s going to be one of the through-line mysteries of the season.”

The question that does intrigue us for the time being is whether or not Damon is going to find a way to get involved in this mess as well? Given that these two are in a relationship, and one that is supposedly going well at the time the season picks up, you have to figure that Elena will want to clue him in. Who knows? Maybe Ian Somerhalder’s character could find himself spending much more time at school than even he was originally planning.

Regardless of what happens, Dries’ fellow “Vampire Diaries” EP Julie Plec is not holding anything back when it comes to her own hype for the season, so we take this to mean one thing: You really should be excited, too. New episodes premiere on The CW on Thursday, October 10 at 8:00 p.m. Eastern time.
