‘Dancing with the Stars’ 17: Maksim Chmerkovskiy may be back

Dancing with the Stars -For those of you who felt like “Dancing with the Stars” was lacking a little bit with the drama this past season, get ready to see some sort of potential change this year courtesy of the famed bad boy of the ballroom in Maksim Chmerkovskiy.

While at TCA yesterday, ABC’s programming head Paul Lee teased that Maks could very well be back this season after sitting the spring installment of the show out. He remains the longest-tenured pro to never have a Mirrorball Trophy to show for it, though his brother Val came very close this past year with Zendaya.  The reason he did not confirm for sure that Maks will return may simply be an issue of casting: The producers assign pros after all of the celebrities are chosen, and the lineup may not be set for a few more weeks.

But is the show better off with Maks on board? Definitely from a controversy standpoint; while some people out there hate the guy and feel like his arrogance weights the show down, he’s also very entertaining when he’s not saying anything too awful. However, at the end of the day what really matters here more than anything else is the quality of the contestants that are actually brought back on the show. We would love it if it was not the all-familiar combination of NFL player / soap star / Disney channel star that is ABC promoting themselves / reality star / Olympian. We understand that some archetypes need to be filled, but can’t you get at least a little bit more creative than this?
