Your Friends & Neighbors season 3: Jon Hamm on future problems

As we head into Your Friends & Neighbors season 3 over on Apple TV, it does feel rather clear that nothing is the same as it once was. Also, that is pretty much by design. We are looking at characters now entering new and complicated places in their lives — by virtue of that, this also means new problems that need to be dealt with.

So what is one of the biggest ones at present? Well, for Coop, it may be the fact that he Nick, and Barney all have a shared secret when it comes to what happened to Owen Ashe. His death looms large and now, they all have to count on each other to handle this … and that may be far more difficult over time.

In speaking on this a little bit further to Variety, here is at least some of what Jon Hamm himself had to say on the subject:

We say it toward the end of the season: “Three people can keep a secret if two of them are dead.” It seems to be a very simple thing to just keep your mouth shut, but going back to Edgar Allan Poe and “The Tell-Tale Heart,” keeping secrets and keeping the past buried is a tried and true suspense-oriented trope to use in storytelling. It serves us very well here to have this “Tell-Tale Heart” beating underneath the floorboards with a steady rhythm to remind us that there’s some darkness creeping up from behind Coop that needs to be dealt with.

In the end we tend to think we are looking at a situation with this show now where many people will be looking over their shoulder — you have these three men for sure, but this season also articulated further how Mel and Sam both see the community in new light. That has to continue as the show presses on.
