Top Chef: Carolinas episode 13: Jonathan Dearden eliminated

We will give Top Chef: Carolinas episode 13 credit for delivering one of the most interesting elimination challenges this season. If there was ever one that emphasized the importance of plating, wasn’t this one it?
With all of that being said, this is also one of the last times you would ever want to be taken out of the competition. Sure, you have a lot of pride for making it this far, but you are so close to the very end! Don’t you want to take part in the finale?

After Rhoda won the Quickfire Challenge (the final one of the season), we did tend to think that she was entering the next part of the episode with a reasonable amount of momentum on her side … if that even exists. Judging from her performance in the Elimination Challenge, we would say that it did.
Ultimately, this is the part of the competition where you are in some ways splitting hairs as to who should go home at the end. Jonathan’s pumpkin plating was one of the cutest things that we’ve ever seen. Meanwhile, Sherry’s deconstruction (including a kimchi risk like no other) showed that she may be peaking at just the right time.
Now, what happened at the end?
Like we said, this was tricky. Jonathan and Laurence were really the only two to get any negative feedback at all, and it was small. There was a small part of us that wondered if the judges were just going to send all four of the chefs forward. Yet, it did come down to just Laurence and Jonathan, and it was Jonathan who was eventually sent out the door. We feel for him, but it is always better to leave on a good dish, right?
