Fire Country season 4 finale: Why no major cliffhanger?

We went into the Fire Country season 4 finale thinking that, on some level, we were going to see something similar to what we have in the past. By virtue of that, we are talking about an intense, bonkers ending that led to us screaming for weeks, if not months, to come.
So why end this go-around with a wedding reception, a confession of love from Bode and Chloe, and also a lot of happiness in general. As it turns out, it was really designed to be more of a palette-cleanser after the season kicked off with both the death of Vince and exit of Gabriela.

Speaking to TV Insider about the specific ending to this season, star and executive producer Max Thieriot noted that there was a lot of intention around the overall ending:
… I think given the nature of what the job is, it’s easy to get drawn into storylines that are difficult and emotionally, I guess, down just because of the nature of what these people do. But I think it’s also really important that two things. One, you’re finding fun in the firehouse and feeling this camaraderie is super important and lace that throughout episodes. But two, I think we felt like, yeah, given where we started, we wanted to finish on a positive note. We wanted to finish with some hope and some joy and something new, new beginnings. And so I know that was certainly something that we wanted to do at the end of the season.
Ultimately, we tend to think the end of this season does open up the show to have more of a traditional cliffhanger for the next go-around. After all, there could have been a sentiment here that if you go this route too often, the idea of a shocker loses its meaning.
