We knew heading into the Saturday Night Live tonight that Sir Paul McCartney would serve as the musical guest. Was that exciting? A million percent, but it also made it really hard to predict what he would perform? How can you anticipate something from a guy with this long and storied a career?

As it turns out, McCartney chose to actually come on the stage with some new music. To be specific, we’re talking about “Days We Left Behind.” This was a song meant to be emotional and reflective, a tribute to everything that he has had a chance to do over the course of several decades. He’s always embraced the various eras of his career, but he certainly did it here more than ever before.

Without question, there is a chance that you are going to get emotional watching this one, especially if you are a longtime Beatles or McCartney fan. This is the sort of music that only someone can really make at this stage in their life, when they have the ability to understand so many different experiences in the past.

As for the second song tonight…

Well, this is where McCartney chose to deliver a classic, delivering a rendition of “Band on the Run” from his Wings days. This is the crazy thing when you think about it — this is a song that is more than 50 years old and yet, one that could have new life on the show. (As a sidebar, this is a song that technically older than SNL itself, and you certainly do not see that much these days.)

Ultimately, we do hope that Sir Paul’s appearance tonight actually exposed younger viewers to some of his music — especially from his Wings days, which certainly doesn’t get as much attention as what he did with the Beatles.
