The Neighborhood season 9: Why isn’t it happening at CBS?

Tonight marks the series finale for The Neighborhood over on CBS — but did this really have to be the end of the line here? Ultimately, we never are going to be upset over people clamoring for more of any show, especially one that managed to last for as long as this one did.

After all, consider how few family sitcoms are successful these days. Once upon a time, this is a network that dominated Monday nights with shows like The King of Queens and Everybody Loves Raymond. Where did all of that go? Well, streaming hit the genre hard, as there are more options than ever and there is a contingent of viewers who have never grown too attached to this multi-camera format. It is harder and harder to get strong live + same-day viewership and through that prism alone, you can consider it amazing that The Neighborhood lasted as long as it did.

At least with the Max Greenfield – Cedric the Entertainer series, it is getting a proper chance to say goodbye and wrap up loose ends. That is not something that every show gets, and this is also what makes the odds of an eventual season 9 minimal. Could a reunion / revival happen eventually? Sure, but we’re thinking something 10 or more years down the road. That has been the blueprint when it comes to series like Scrubs, but it would need to find a second life in streaming for that to be considered.

For now, we just feel a lot of gratitude that CBS stayed committed to the show for as long as they did, especially when you consider some of the roadblocks that were here over the years. The Neighborhood went through quite a bit over the years, whether it be the global health crisis in 2020 / 2021, showrunner changes, or even the industry strikes of 2023. Yet, it found a way to keep going, telling stories that were relatable but also funny at the same exact time.

Are you sad that The Neighborhood season 9 is not going to happen at CBS?
