Call the Midwife season 16 premiere date hopes over on PBS

Is there going to be a Call the Midwife season 16 over at PBS and beyond just that, when could it premiere? At this point, we do not blame anyone who is wondering about either of these things at present. After all, the future of the period drama is a little bit more complicated than it may appear on the surface.

First and foremost, though, let’s just start with a reminder that there is another chapter coming for the series and luckily, that is not something you have to worry about for the time being. However, that does not mean it is coming anytime soon. All present indications from the BBC are that we are going to get a prequel series that kicks off around Christmastime and odds are, that carries through into the new year, taking the regular timeslot of the flagship down. Following that, a feature film starring many of the show’s cast members will arrive; it is only after that we can start having conversations about the long-term future.

Because Call the Midwife season 16 is still so far away, we are looking at a situation here where we may not be seeing much more of these particular characters (in the present anyway) until we get around to late 2027 or early 2028. Is that okay? Well, we recognize why it may be frustrating, but this is where we also have to give a self-reminder here that having fifteen seasons more or less on an annual basis is almost unheard of for a show of this scale. Sure, we have a few big-budget hits stateside on network TV that pull it off, but they also tend to do shorter episodes and stories that don’t pull on your heart-strings so much.

No matter what the future holds, the biggest thing that we can assure you is that there is a future. Fingers crossed, that gives you enough to cling to while we continue to traverse what is looking more and more to be an incredibly long hiatus. (Remember that typically, Call the Midwife also airs a few months later on PBS than it does on BBC One — that could play a part in any future dates.)
