Is Angela Bassett leaving 9-1-1 after season 9 finale? Is Athena dead?
Is Angela Bassett poised to leave 9-1-1 following the events of the season 9 finale? For now, it feels fair to wonder this, mostly because of the previews. Athena is shown in a life-or-death situation and beyond just that, someone may even be hunting her in the hospital. This is a lot to try and overcome, to put it mildly.
Now, let’s just say that heading into the end of the season, there was no indication out there that Bassett (who is also an executive producer) is poised to depart. To have Athena die so soon after losing Bobby (Peter Krause) would be an enormous stab to the heart. We do recognize the need to put people in danger, but to go this far? Even if Bassett were to depart the show, we tend to think there are a lot of other ways to make that happen beyond killing her character off.

As for what actually happened tonight, Athena did spend the bulk of the hour in a hospital bed. Yet, when the dust settled, she ended up okay! She recovered well enough to be back on the job by the time that we got to the closing montage, one that was far more happy and pleasant than we would have expected.
After all, didn’t you really think that we would make it to the end here without some sort of cliffhanger? It is crazy to think about it and yet, that is precisely what we got once we arrived at the end.
