Is Chris McNally leaving When Calls the Heart and the role of Lucas following the events of the season 13 finale tonight?

We will admit first and foremost here that we have actually been worried about the character’s future for a while — really ever since he became Governor. It was a role that took him out of Hope Valley, and that made it harder for him to be featured in every storyline. However, the producers found ways to integrate him, and more recently we have seen a story play out when it comes to him and Edie.

Now, during the finale tonight Lucas and Edie kissed — and it was right after he agreed to go with her to New York. Given that his term as Governor was coming to a close, he had an opportunity to explore something new. That included not being afraid to find love again after the heartache with Elizabeth.

What does all this mean?

Lucas moving to New York does not in itself mean that McNally is gone from When Calls the Heart forever. Meanwhile, there is no confirmation in the immediate aftermath of the finale that the actor will not return. That makes us hopeful, though there is a chance that he could be gone here and there. Just remember that there are a few different ways in which the story could continue with him, including that there is a time jump and by the time of the premiere, he and Edie could be back and settled in to Hope Valley.

One other reason to think Chris could still be a part of this world long-term? He has a long history of working with Hallmark on various projects. Until we hear something official he is leaving, we will continue to hold out hope.
