Virgin River season 7 premiere: Is Calvin dead?

We clearly knew heading into the start of Virgin River season 7 that there would be some sort of drama, mostly tied to that big Charmaine cliffhanger. So what did we get?

Well, as of the premiere, Charmaine was very much still alive — however, she also ended up in the wind. Calvin, meanwhile, ended up being the character who was removed from the equation. His death signaled a lot for the rest of the season, but it also just made some sense given the way that he has come and gone from the series already over time.

Speaking to TVLine, executive producer Patrick Sean Smith did his best to describe what went into taking that character out at this point:

“I knew somebody was dead, but I wasn’t sure who exactly it was until I knew what it would lead to … I saw the potential in what the different [options] were, but I wanted to explore all the different choices to see which played best in the totality of the season.”

Smith also added that there was a certain convenience to remaining Calvin at this point, noting that the character “has already come back from the dead and wants his children and has murdered people. [The performer for the role was recast in Season 6] as well, so it just felt like an opportunity to clean that out.” Also, we do think it helps to remove someone from the equation just to show that people can die within the universe, and it does add a certain amount of stakes as a result of that.
