Hijack season 3: Is more possible? EP on possible stories

Coming out of the Hijack season 2 finale on Apple TV, it obviously makes some element of sense to think about a season 3 — however, is it really possible at this point?

Well, let’s just start things off here by noting a little more of what happened at the end of season 2. Remember that Sam Nelson survived the train crisis and, at least for the time being, has (shockingly) not been arrested. Meanwhile, we know now that Stuart was behind the whole thing and technically, he is still out there — albeit in prison. That alone could be valuable to a future story, but more is required beyond just that, no?

Speaking to Variety, executive producer Jim Field Smith noted that there is the possibility of more, but there is also no guarantee at this point:

If Apple decide they want another bite of the of the “Hijack” cherry, the question I will always ask is, what story is there for Sam? Not, where can we do it, but why? Of course, yeah, it could be on a boat. It could be on an e-bike, it could be in the back of a limo, it could be, you know, a submarine. Or it could transcend the “Hijack” format and it could move into a different arena. But that’s what I mean. The precinct is kind of irrelevant. It’s more about “Where could Sam go?”

As you said, Stuart’s still alive, there’s obviously beef between those two, so clearly, there’s different routes we could go down. I definitely don’t think we’ll be doing like, “Oh, Sam Nelson is now a guy that just bad s–t happens to him all the time.” It’s got to be connected in the same way that Season 2 is connected to Season 1. If we did a Season 3, it would have to be connected to Season 2. You can’t just go, “Well, this is just a successful show, so we’re just going to carry on making it.” I’m not interested in that. I don’t think anyone’s interested in watching that either.

For now, we would just like to see Sam in an environment where he is not as inherently miserable, given that it is a lot to keep asking this character to be in these dark, cramped-up spaces. A cruise ship honestly would be great just because you’d have a different climate — and also could have him move around a bit more.
