The Simpsons 800th episode: Will there ever be a series finale?

This weekend on Fox, you are going to get a massive celebration when it comes to The Simpsons and its 800th episode. We recognize that there are going to be a lot of fun moments and notable guest stars here, but could it be paving the way towards something more?
While it is clear that the animated comedy is already pretty historic for its longevity, we recognize that at some point, we are going to have a chance to see it end. However, that does not mean it will conclude in the near future. The series has been renewed already through season 40, so we at least have a few more years of the series to go. We will see what happens from there but if there was ever a time to say goodbye to Springfield, that does feel like it.

Speaking to The Wrap recently, showrunner Matt Selman had the following to say on the concept of saying goodbye here, and also whether or not it could actually happen:
“We did an episode about a year-and-a-half ago that was like a parody of the series finale … We jammed every possible series finale concept into one show, so that was sort of my way of saying we’re never going to do a series finale. We did a series finale in the middle of the show that made fun of all the ideas of wrapping everything up or ending.
“The show isn’t supposed to change. The characters reset every week. It’s like Groundhog Day but they don’t know it — and they don’t die that much. If the show ever did end, there’s no finale, it would just be a regular episode that has the family in it. Probably a little Easter egg here and there, but no ‘I’m going to miss this place.’”
The Easter eggs, at least in our mind, would be best suited to include every decade that the show has been around. If we were to see that, it feels like we would have an incredibly entertaining and (of course) funny conclusion.
Do you think that a series like The Simpsons should ever have a proper series-ender?
Be sure to share right now in the comments and once you do, come back — there are a lot of other updates on the way.
