‘American Idol’ winner Phillip Phillips rocks out on ‘The Today Show’

Today ShowPhillip Phillips has had quite a journey in the past year or so. Remember when everyone touted him as just another “white guy with guitar” winner of “American Idol,” destined to fade into obscurity? That was before “Home” became an anthem at the Summer Olympics, and one of the biggest hits of 2012. He’s since followed that up with a single in “Gone Gone Gone” that has also become a big success on adult contemporary radio, proving that he’s not just a one-hit wonder thanks to Olympics coverage. Both songs, and also his album “The World from the Side of the Moon,” are a commercial success.

So what did that lead to Friday? An energetic set as a part of “The Today Show’s” Summer Concert Series. In addition to performing the two songs mentioned above, he also took on “Man on the Moon,” and described some of his touring experiences in the past year during an interview. The man got to open for Bruce Springsteen!

You can see all three of Phillip’s performances from the show below, and the interview is attached to his performance of “Gone Gone Gone” specifically. He’ll be on tour this summer with John Mayer, just in case you have not gotten the chance to hear the news already.

What do you think about Phillip getting this opportunity today? If you want to check out some more “American Idol” notes related to Adam Lambert and Kelly Clarkson, it’s our advice that you head on over to the link here.
