‘Law & Order: SVU’ season 15 spoilers: The future of Mariska Hargitay’s Olivia

Now that you know for sure that Mariska Hargitay will be back to “Law & Order: SVU” courtesy of signing an all-new contract, there is another question that comes with it: Is there anything about Olivia’s role that is going to change, especially since she has been on the force for so long? While in real life, a promotion here would probably be inevitable given the full extent of her talents and her success rate, that doesn’t work quite as well in the world of TV, where you constantly have pressure to keep things exciting, and watching Olivia at a desk doesn’t exactly qualify as edge of your seat entertainment.

With that in mind, we have for you this first bit of scoop about season 15 of the long-running NBC show courtesy of executive producer Warren Leight in a chat with TV Guide:

“Even if she were [promoted], in my mind she would be a player-coach … You don’t want to limit her emotional range.”

We also think that there is a certain amount of the feeling mixed in here that if “Law & Order: SVU” is ending at any point in the near future, it ends with Olivia doing what she has done such a great job at over the years: Working in the field. The show cannot have a long life ahead for it at this point, and we still would not be in the least bit surprised if the show did end up saying a fond farewell at the end of this year. As always, it will be very much dependent upon the ratings.
