‘Game of Thrones’: Tywin Lannister, ‘Mad Men’s’ Don Draper top list of terrible TV dads
Who is really the worst TV father of them all? It’s an interesting question, and one we certainly pondered going into Father’s Day on Sunday. Yes, we know that there are plenty of great fathers out there in the world of television (Burt Hummel, Cam and Mitchell, Richard Castle), those are all a tad boring to sit here and write about how amazing they all are.
Instead, why not put the emphasis on the bad eggs for a change? These are the people who should be getting a big bag of nothing for Father’s Day. As a matter of fact, at least one of them would be likely to chop your head off if you were to actually mention the words “Happy Father’s Day” to the them. The irony here is that these characters are all grounded in some way by wonderful performances, which serves to us as some sort of tangible proof that you need a great deal of talent if you actually do want to play “bad” well.
Tywin Lannister (“Game of Thrones“) – Clearly among the worst. He nearly threw Tyrion into the ocean upon his birth, and spends the entirety of his life belittling him and forcing him into marrying a young girl. He’s a man who manages to be a tyrant, even at home.
Don Draper (“Mad Men”) – He’s distant to his children, and to make matters even worse, he cheats on his wives and puts himself in positions to be caught. Do you think Sally Draper is going to be altogether interested in waking up early in order to make her dad breakfast after the way he handled her catching him cheating on Megan?
Walter White (“Breaking Bad”) – Need we explain why Walt is on this list, aside from becoming such a terrible influence that Skyler had to literally force her kids to go live elsewhere? This alone says everything you need to know.
Jax Teller (“Sons of Anarchy”) – We don’t doubt that he loves his family, but there’s a difference between loving someone and then doing what this man does for a living. If you really want to be a nice man, four words: Get out of SAMCRO.
Frank Reynolds (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”) – We would be here all day trying to list of some of the weird, insane, and above all disgusting things that Danny DeVitto’s character has done on this FX series. It’s the only comedy on here, and maybe the laughter is why he gets away with it.
