2013 Tony Awards: Neil Patrick Harris, Mike Tyson, and cheerleaders open show
Every year, we have a tendency to see the Tony Awards open to some sort of enormously grand ceremony, and it typically (at least over the past five years or so) involves host Neil Patrick Harris telling jokes, singing, and dancing. (Sometimes, he manages to do all three at once.)
So did the man disappoint this year? Hardly. After making a joke about not being the first person asked to host this year’s edition of the show (a certain “Transformers” star was), he then went into a song-and-dance number proclaiming to make the show “bigger” than it has ever been before and when you consider everything this show has done before, that’s quite a challenge.
The thing about Harris is that he doesn’t really reinvent the wheel with any of hist hosting gigs, but he really doesn’t need to. Perhaps the most impressive thing that he did was jump through a tiny paper hoop, though a close second place would be seeing the Magic Castle man do a trick of his own.
Then, we had an impressive celebrity cameo. In talking about his one-man show, legendary boxer Mike Tyson came out and sort-of sang a few lines. We don’t want to say anything too negative about Tyson, mostly because we don’t want him to develop hacking skills and then track us down.
What did you think about Neil’s introduction, especially compared to years past? If you want to see what the “How I Met Your Mother” star had to say prior to the start of the show, you can do so over at the link here.
