Fall TV preview: ABC’s ‘Betrayal’ sounds like ‘Revenge’ … but is it?

Betrayal“Revenge” may be sweet … but is “Betrayal”? For the latest edition of our Fall TV Preview series, we do our best to try to take on this question.

At the moment, we’re not sure that the answer is “yes.” We don’t really know if ABC’s new Sunday-night attempt to revive the 10:00 p.m. Eastern time slot is going to work out, mostly because we still have no idea what the show is about. Like “Revenge,” it has a New York setting, and its lead character is a young woman (this time played by Hannah Ware). However, this feels much more like a love story between an artistic woman and a powerful man.

We’re trying to figure out what ABC saw in picking this up, and our guess for now is that it feels somewhat in the vein of “Scandal” and “Revenge” in that it has that same sort of racy vibe to it that, basically as close to the edge as you can get on network TV before people really freak out. (There is definitely some of that in the trailer.) Also there’s James Cromwell, and he was absolutely incredible on “American Horror Story” this past season.

This is where we run out of good things to say, though. This trailer is pretty awful, mostly because it fails to really sell itself as anything save for a story between two people, and there’s not enough there to make it compelling save for a little bit of chemistry. We could be wrong, but we’re not sure that this is going to be the show that reverses the the cursed 10 o’clock spot where shows like “Pan Am,” “GCB,” “666 Park Avenue,” and “Red Widow” have all gone to die.

Do you disagree, and are you excited for this show? If you want to read about some other shows hitting the airwaves this fall, just be sure to pay a visit to the link here.
