2013 Teen Choice Awards analysis: ‘Supernatural,’ ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ ‘Arrow’ battle

For the following category preview in our Teen Choice Awards series, we might as well rename it “the battle of The CW shows.” Four out of the five nominees come from the network, and these are also the four with the best shot at winning the Choice TV: Fantasy / Sci-fi category. The fan-bases are huge for all of these shows, but if we’re honest, this is probably going to come down to a fight between two juggernauts that tend to always clean house at this awards show.

The nominees – “Arrow” (The CW), “Beauty and the Beast” (The CW), “Once Upon a Time” (ABC), “Supernatural” (The CW), “The Vampire Diaries” (The CW)

The favorite – We have to say that it’s “The Vampire Diaries” by a fairly decent margin, with “Supernatural” tracking in second place. This show is touted by the network as the most-social on broadcast TV for a reason. It has a huge fan-base, and it’s one that cares enough about the show and its fans to vote and vote and then vote some more. We don’t know if there’s another contender that can match this high level of enthusiasm.

Who should win – This is a little bit tricky. There are parts in “The Vampire Diaries” and “Once Upon a Time” where the story sagged this season, and although “Arrow” had a knockout first season and “Beauty and the Beast” was very strong its final few weeks, we’re going with “Supernatural” for a heck of a comeback season. We were not crazy in love with season 7, but the past 23 episodes marked a return to good storytelling, and it also improved its ratings year-to-year. There aren’t too many other shows that can say that (though “The Vampire Diaries” is one of them).
