NBC’s ‘The Voice’ alum Midas Whale take the Kickstarter to fund new album
We made it clear just about all season long on “The Voice,” that we were firmly in the corner of Midas Whale, and were thus somewhat depressed / devastated to see them ultimately dismissed from the show, even if the woman who defeated them in the knockout rounds (in Amber Carrington) has proved to be a pretty strong contender.
However, we have to give the pair of Jon Peter Lewis and Ryan J Hayes credit for thinking outside of the box and trying to create something new: Namely, a Kickstarter to crowd-fund an upcoming album The disc is almost halfway to its $30,000 goal as of this writing, and there are still 20 days to go.
When you think about technology, there’s nothing trendier out there than crowd-funding. It gives fans an opportunity to prove market value, and it also gives you the opportunity to earn some super swag that you would never get otherwise. (Think of it as buying a piece of a super-ultimate-amazing-limited edition of a big-budget movie.)
Could we see other singing-show stars take to this idea? It wouldn’t be a surprise, given that this does allow them more to make the album they really want to make, and not just one to suit the self-interests of a label. This very thing has tragically become emblematic of the music industry as of late, but independent releases are starting to pile up. Just ask Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, who have two #1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 without an official record deal to their name.
