As you read yesterday, Reese Witherspoon has canceled many of her upcoming TV appearances due to the recent arrest of both her and husband Jim Toth over the weekend after getting stopped for a DUI. However, this has not stopped some of the late-night hosts currently on TV from talking about her.
Let’s start things off with Jimmy Kimmel, whose discussion of her arrest was made especially awkward since Witherspoon previously appeared in a bit for him featuring multiple bottles of alcohol. The comedian specifically chose in his monologue to go after one part of the arrest report, in which she tried to use her notoriety to get out of the arrest:
“The police report says she asked the cop ‘Do you know my name? You’re about to find out who I am.’ Does that ever work? ‘Do you know who I am?’ is second only to ‘Do you know who my father is?’ It’s a bad question because the answer is either ‘no’ — which is embarrassing — or ‘yes, and you’re going to jail.'”
Meanwhile, a close personal friend of Witherspoon’s in Chelsea Handler took a much kinder approach. At the upfront presentation for the network that producers her late-night show “Chelsea Lately” in E!, Handler came to her defense by saying (per “Entertainment Tonight“) that the Oscar-winner was just trying to stand up for someone who needed the extra support:
“She’s doing fine. She’s doing fine, you know? She’s just trying to protect her husband, I mean, everybody makes mistakes, so it’s not a big deal.”
