NBC considering ‘Chicago Fire’ spin-off series

Chicago FireUsually, it takes a couple of seasons of your show being a success in order for a network to want to consider a spin-off. However, when you’re NBC … let’s just say that things can sometimes move a little bit quicker. “Chicago Fire” has turned into a modest hit for them, so why not find a way to create a separate show that focuses on much of the same thing?

According to a brand-new report that is coming in via Deadline, network executives are considering the idea of creating a separate show that, like the flagship, will focus on a specific department in the Windy City. However, the difference here is that the focus will be placed almost squarely on the police department rather than the folks working to stop fires. The executive producers on board this show, which include Derek Haas, and Michael Brandt, longtime “Law & Order” titan Dick Wolf, and Matt Olmstead will be also on board this show.

The one question that remains here is whether or not there’s really enough time to create a backdoor pilot for this series this spring, or if the producers are just going to try and work out a way to feature a couple of “Chicago Fire” characters sporadically in the new show. This does at least give NBC the opportunity of promoting crossover episodes if it works out, and possibly find an eventual replacement for the long-running “Law & Order: SVU,” which has to end at some point after so many years on the air.

What do you think: is the idea of a “Chicago Fire” spin-off, appealing, or something that you can really do without? If you want to read some more about some recent “Chicago Fire” ratings, you can do so over at the link here.
