ABC’s ‘Castle’ season 5, episode 18 preview: Ready for Ryan’s closeup?

The 100th episode of “Castle” season 5 is just a matter of 13 days away, but before we come to that milestone, we also have something else rather significant to celebrate: the upcoming showcase for Seamus Dever’s Detective Ryan. Just like we had an episode earlier this season that was very Esposito-centric, this installment is going to put one of Castle and Beckett’s other co-workers under the spotlight.

Specifically, what is going to happen on this occasion is that Ryan will be forced into going undercover following some sort of tragic baking-related murder (which is something that we never imagined we would say), and this is a case that brings him very much back to his roots. We will be meeting at least one person from his past this week, and through this should also learn a thing or two about the person that Ryan was before he became a detective for the force or got involved in his current relationship.

When it comes to the long-term impact that this episode will have, we don’t really expect it will be much since the majority of the Ryan plotlines are designed more to supplement everything else than to really stand out on their own. With that being said, this is not a slam by any means; there can be some great episodes that don’t contribute to a longer story, and just provide us with an hour of pure escapism that makes us love the characters more than we did previously.
