‘Pretty Little Liars’ finale spoilers: Interpreting Spencer Hastings
Why would she do that? If you are a fan of “Pretty Little Liars,” then it is likely that you are going to be asking this question at the moment of Troian Bellisario’s character of Spencer Hastings. She is a girl who for almost all of the first three seasons has been a loyal stalwart at the side of Aria, Hanna, and Emily, but now all of a sudden she seems both interested and invested in taking a very dark turn.
So why is the character deciding now to join “The A Team”? Is she hoping to find out information about Toby, or looking to take out the world from within? Speaking in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, executive producer Oliver Goldstick states that these are all worthy questions to ask right now of the character as she struggles to figure out how to both help herself and the people close to her:
“You should be asking what is behind that, and that leads right up to the finale. If in fact this is something she has been contemplating for some time. Is this something she needs to do to reconnect and to find out if there’s any chance that Toby could still be alive? If you saw the closer, chances are he’s not. She didn’t see that, we saw that, that was privileged information. It tells the audience you’re ahead of Spencer, she may have to catch up with you.”
So will Spencer be in for a rude awakening once she sees that body? While the show obviously wants us to assume that Toby is dead, there is still a legion of folks out there hoping he is somehow still alive. After all, it feels like there is so much of his story left out there that we would like to see, as we never really had a full grasp as to what he is doing with “A” or why he is so relentless in ruining the lives of those close to him.
What do you think: is Spencer still fighting for good, and are you hoping that Toby is still alive? If you want to check out one of the early clips from the “Pretty Little Liars” finale, you can do so over at the link here.
