‘American Idol’ preview: Why Burnell Taylor, Charlie Askew will likely advance
Last night, we saw the top ten ladies of “American Idol” do their best to impress, and what we ultimately ended up seeing was a group of pretty talented singers all choose to do one ballad after another. There were highlights (Kree Harrison and Candice Glover), but on the flip side the show was honestly boring. No one tried to up the energy level and get the crowd going, and the irony is that the vast majority of the songs performed on the show are at odds of actually airing on pop radio at the moment.
Can the guys turn it around? In terms of talent, it’s not there for them so much as it is with the ladies; however, there are still opportunities for them to deliver something that will have people talking for the rest of the season. These are the five people that we see moving on to the top 10 next week, at least without some extra help from the judges.
Lazaro Arbos – You may not think him deserving based on his vocal ability, but in getting him in front of an audience, Nigel Lythgoe had to know that he would make it to at least the tour.
Burnell Taylor – An interesting singer with a unique voice, a substantial edit, and a cool look. Burnell may be the closest thing the show has this season to a male star.
Vincent Powell – We are slightly worried about Vincent and Burnell canceling each other out at R&B / soul singers, but we think that these will be the two advancing with Cortez Shaw (who is a little more pop) and Curtis Finch Jr. (more gospel) are left in the cold.
Paul Jolley – He’s a good-looking country singer. Enough said, though we would much rather see an appearance from either Devin Velez or Nick Boddington on the show moving forward.
Charlie Askew – Substitute “good-looking country singer” for “funny and quirky,” and you have why Charlie will probably make it through despite vocals that are all over the place. He seems like a pretty smart kid, so we do expect to see him tone down some of his goofiness and his ham behavior in front of an audience. Just be the kid that we rooted for during Hollywood Week, and we will love and root for you all over again.
