The newest “X Factor” USA judging rumor is upon us, and this time nobody seems to be waiting to find out whether or not Britney Spears will keep her post before getting the rumor mill going.
There are some reports coming out now via Examiner that Rimes is still interested in a judging position, and this would be the second straight year that her name has floated around out there. (She has also been a contender for “America’s Got Talent,” which has still yet to announce its replacement for the departing Sharon Osbourne.) Rimes obviously has some sort of relationship with Simon Cowell and producers after coming in to duet with Carly Rose Sonenclar during the finale, and she does have a country-music fanbase that has helped “The Voice” out with ratings.
However, this rumor is still so problematic that it is hard to see it seriously. Even before the negative reviews, the backlash, and the allegations that came out of the awkward duet with Sonenclar (who did her best to save the duet), Rimes was still a risky choice to be a judge on any singing show. Her personal life has just made her such a polarizing figure in America, and for every new viewer you would get with her there would also be concerns that she would keep other people from watching.
If you are looking for one positive to Rimes as a judge, however, it would be that she is someone the show could afford. There’s no way that Rimes would ask for or receive the $15 million paycheck of Spears, and she would certainly do a better job giving feedback. However, Spears was still reasonably likable, and she did have a finalist this year in Carly (which is an undeniable success).
Spears is likely to be let go from the show due to salary and performance reasons, and she will join L.A. Reid, who announced prior to the finale that he is leaving in order to get back to his main job as a record executive.
