‘Sons of Anarchy’ season 5 spoilers: Will Nero ever take a dark turn?

In an effort to promote the final few episodes of “Sons of Anarchy” season 5, Jimmy Smits took part in a conference call with reporters on Thursday … and was kind enough to at least share a few vague thoughts on what is going to be coming up the rest of the way here.

Ever since the beginning of Nero’s arc on the show, there has been really one question that has haunted us with this character: how in the world is this guy so not a horrible person? After all, if you just look at the position in which he is in with his life, most people would carry much more darkness with them. However, don’t think that he is going to stay so weak and innocent forever. As a matter of fact, Smits promises that the darkness within his character is going to be manifested in a public way soon:

“What I think is [SOA creator Kurt Sutter’s] strong suit in terms of writing is that he lays the groundwork and then blows it up so that nothing is what it really seems. It’s definitely gonna take a turn. You can’t have this guy who’s an ex-gangbanger and not see a little bit of that come out.”

Will Smits actually last beyond this season? This is really one of the questions that is in most need of an answer at the moment. Most guest stars in his capacity only tend to last a year and never return. The two most convenient ways to end this story are either via death, or for a convenient way to write the character out.

What do you want to see happen to this character by the end of this season?
