His Dark Materials episode 7 spoilers: Lyra fights for herself

As we move into His Dark Materials episode 7, the stakes have never been higher — especially so close to the finale. There are only two more installments left in this season, and things are only going to get more intense from here on out. Lyra finds herself largely alone, struggling to figure out how to keep surviving and pressing onward. She’s facing a rough road and, in general, a lot of people who want to accomplish some really-dark stuff.

That is one of the things that we’ve learned the most from covering His Dark Materials over the course of this season — don’t mistake what we’re seeing here in terms of younger characters as evidence that this is a show just for kids. This is taking on themes of separation, heartbreak, and a victory-at-all-costs mentality that leads to many characters getting traumatized in a rather serious manner.

Yet, we still want to hope for some happier times eventually — the big struggle is just going to be waiting for what comes once this season is over! (Remember that there is a season 2 on the horizon.)

Mrs. Coulter’s endgame this season should prove to be one of the most compelling things to behold. In general, Ruth Wilson is a bright spot for this series as this character. She just brings to the table such a strong, commanding presence — this is the sort of character you just can’t look away from, especially when her motives are so complicated — as is the relationship that she has already with Lyra.
