David Letterman and Jimmy Kimmel sit down … and get awkward (video)

When it comes to Jimmy Kimmel, there was probably one interview that he was looking forward to conducting more so than any other on his trip to Brooklyn this past more than any other: David Letterman. The host of “The Late Show” is notoriously private much like his mentor Johnny Carson, and rarely does interviews away from his own show. As a matter of fact, this is really only his second major sit-down interview on another show this year following a chat with Alec Baldwin on his “Here’s the Thing” podcast.

So what caused him to make an exception here? As Kimmel showed (at times awkwardly) during his chat with the late-night legend below, he has shared a fascination and obsession for all things Letterman, dating back to his days hosting “Late Night” on NBC prior to his jump over to CBS after the original “Tonight Show” fiasco so many years ago. The guy actually had a “Late Night” birthday cake! It was fun in a way to see that Kimmel was able to make his dream come true of having a show, even if Letterman in this context didn’t seem to know how to respond to all of this flattery.

The rest of the interview was really by the numbers at times, as the two discussed everything from family to “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” continuing to do their shows in Brooklyn in the aftermath of what happened with Hurricane Sandy. Jimmy also repeatedly did his best to convince Letterman that the two should hang out or go fly-fishing together, but he was not exactly keen on the idea. As a matter of fact, Letterman insisted that he really does not have any male friends at all.

Do you think that this interview was a gracious exchange of pleasantries between two late-night powers, or more of what Letterman probably goes through on a regular basis meeting superfans?
