Macy’s Parade 2019: Lea Michele one of many lip-sync snafus

Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

It’s a Thanksgiving tradition — having someone who struggles with the lip-sync requirements of the Macy’s Parade. There were many offenders this year, but the biggest one may very well be Lea Michele.

At the start of her performance tonight aboard a float, it took the former Glee star and stage actress some time in order to get her mic in front of her face. Yet, her voice was already coming out! It was a jarring moment to kick things off, but it really shouldn’t be something that is taken too seriously. (We’re sure Lea will get some social-media burns for it, but that’s pretty much it.)

Of course, before everyone comes to bury Lea for what happened, remember this — if you’re on a float during the Macy’s Parade, it’s pretty much impossible to sing live. The sound conditions cause all sorts of problems, and that’s without even considering the weather. This is information that a lot of performers (including Rita Ora, who was subject to a lot of flack for her lip-sync snafu last year) have made clear over the years. We all know that Lea Michele can sing and in a different environment, she almost certainly would. There’s no real controversy here; just a silly Thanksgiving Parade tradition that we’ve come to appreciate as a part of the silly festivities.

Michele will have some other holiday-related headlines this year, as she is starring in an upcoming ABC television movie about the holiday. Meanwhile, some other attendees for the parade (at least in musical form) included Billy Porter, Jimmy Fallon (who started his performance a hair too late), TLC, and Chicago. As is typical fashion, it feels like there are a billion or so people performing at the parade in a very brief span of time.

The only artists who do tend to sing live on the Parade year after year are those who are a little more stationary — take, for example, some of the performers in the 9:00 a.m. Eastern hour who are all standing in place. It’s just a little bit easier to plan for some of those performances and also offer up legitimate sound for them.
