It’s Thanksgiving week, and at this point we know what that means — opportunities for a lot of us in the TV world to make mountains out of molehills. We’ve gone down this road before and guess what? We’ll probably do it again.
For the sake of this article, though, we want to break down the performance of The Resident season 3 on Fox, while at the same time also reminding you that the numbers aren’t as much of a cause for freaking out as they may at first seem. There’s no question that, on the surface, the medical drama receiving a 0.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic is bad news. You want to see the show stay stable, especially since Fox has put a premium on their timeslots. They don’t have many for original programming when you think about how many hours that they have on their schedule overall.
Yet, consider this: It’s two days before Thanksgiving. The Tuesday before the holiday is often when families are traveling or, at the very least, preparing to travel. There’s a reason why some networks (take NBC) are wary about airing new scripted programming on the night. Those who do probably take lower ratings into account in advance. There’s a reason why a show like The Masked Singer isn’t airing a new episode at all tonight, and same goes for One Chicago already going on hiatus.
The Resident won’t see its future fate determined by the numbers that it drew tonight. Instead, that will be more a product of what happens weeks and months down the road.
Here’s the surprise of the night
FBI and NCIS: New Orleans actually drew some of their best numbers in a while in a 0.9 rating and a 0.8 rating. Why were these two shows able so succeed where The Resident did not? A lot of it has to do with competition. While The Resident aired opposite a full slate of programming, FBI and NCIS: New Orleans were free from airing opposite This Is Us and New Amsterdam. Clearly, the number of available viewers for these shows were enough to compensate for those who were lost due to the holiday.
What do you think about the latest ratings for The Resident season 3?
